Washington prevails in the Sugar Bowl over Texas
Washington defeated No. 3 Alabama 37–31 thanks to a nearly record-breaking performance by Michael Penix. With 430 yards and two touchdowns from 76 percent of his passes, Penix had the fourth-highest passing yardage in a College Football Playoff game.
After both sides responded with scoring drives to level the game at 21 points apiece at the interval, it looked like a shootout in the first half. But the Huskies were able to pull away as Washington scored 13 points in a row to begin the second half.

Penix’s outstanding performance and wide receivers Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk’s combined over 100 receiving yards helped Washington pull away. Texas’s first three possessions of the second half were halted by two crucial fumbles that the Huskies caused on defense.

With less than a minute remaining, Washington running back Dillon Johnson’s injury stopped the clock, giving Texas a chance for a last-second score. Texas rallied late. But after an incomplete pass from Quinn Ewers to Adonai Mitchell, Texas’ attempt to drive for the game-winning touchdown finally came to a stop at 13-yard line.
